In 1999, Marshall Bruce Mathers III, commonly known as Eminem or his alter ego, Slim Shady, released his major-label debut The Slim Shady LP. In 2000, he followed it up with the Marshall Mathers LP, and its first single, “The Real Slim Shady,’ which begged the question of just who was the real Slim Shady.
Despite the flamboyant style of Eminem lyricism, frequent biting insults and a propensity to imaginary violence, Mathers seems strikingly parallel to the Average Joe. At least on the surface. Raised by a single parent in a troubled home that shifted frequently between Missouri and Detroit, he grew up bullied and with below average grades. He married and divorced his high school sweetheart, twice, and has a daughter with her, in addition to two other adopted children. He-s had a few episodes with the law, but none that brush in comparison to his highly stylized fictional/lyrical life. Still, Eminem, or Slim Shady, remains a controversial figure who finds no topic off limits for parody or scrutiny. Through his music, he-s created a number of rivalries between himself and other stars, been accused of encouraging hate crimes and domestic violence, and remains a polarizing yet chart-topping individual.

What life would be like without pop music, do we really want to know? Without pop music there would be no standard that separates the commercial music world from other music, but mostly there would be nothing to argue about for most music fans. If you love or hate pop music, then you really need pop music to take sides over. Most music fans love to argue about what is cool or the best in music, but nobody would have anything to argue over if there was no pop music. Without commercialism there is no underground and without pop music there would be nothing cool. Also pop music makes the big money for the music industry, this same money allows the industry to take chances on less commercially viable artists and so pop music is a necessary evil. So what would life be like without pop music? It probably would not be half as fun or interesting, but really most of us would not have anything worth listening to at home or on the radio. Pop music makes the world have a reason to listen to something else, or give new things a try that we normally would not have.

What life would be like without rap music? If anyone really wanted to know, then they probably do not have a clue how much more diverse music has become thanks to rap music and hip hop. The music industry was well on the way to making everything from heavy metal to funk commercialized, but it was rap and hip hop that really changed the landscape of modern music. Most people think that rap just brought in a more ethnic influence to commercial pop music and radio, this is far from the truth. Rap music brought forth the innovation of modern music and dub sampling. Rap created a new style musically and it also made soundtrack music want to have the top radio artists as part of the movie packaging. Rap influenced every musical style in its wake and it became the synthesis for bringing many styles together that never had been. Rap also gave way for the eventuality that was born in the modern musical style known as hip hop. What life would be like without rap music, why would anyone want to know? It would probably be very boring to listen to the radio today, that is for sure.

Music is life. It gets into your veins, moves you, makes you dance, and rallies people together. What would the world be like if music didn-t exist? What if rock music wasn-t around? If John Lennon and Paul McCartney had never met? If Elvis had never been crowned King? What if bands we know and love had fallen victim to censorship regulations?

Rock is synonymous with rebellion and shock. It is here to fuel the youth and get your attention. The world was stunned when Elvis Presley shook his hips on national television and tried to censor his image. Songs like “American Idiot’ by Green Day mocked the era of George W. Bush openly. System of a Down-s “Chop Suey!’ hit number one on music charts despite politically sensitive lyrics after September 11th. Bands like Rage Against the Machine made a career out of politically motivated lyrics and opinionated standpoints.

Rock music is here to shock, entertain, and keep life interesting. It cannot and will not be silenced. Without rock, life would remain uneventful, boring, tedious and plain. Without rock, our generation would not understand the value of questioning authority, breaking down barriers, or fighting for the right to party.
